Creating simple shapes

One of the great things about open office is that each of the main modules is tightly integrated with the OpenOffice.org Draw program.

In addition to the simple drawing tools we will explore here, there are also a full suite of very powerful drawing tools at your disposal.

We'll draw a box to enclose the items used to illustrate the taxable account, then we'll also create a box to enclose the tax-deferred items.

We'll start by long clicking the rectangle tool, this will show the different rectangle options.

The items at the top will build filled rectangles and squares, the items at the bottom will build unfilled rectangles or squares. The items to the right will build rectangles with rounded corners.

We'll choose a hollow rectangle with square edges, then click and drag to draw the shape.

Next, create a copy of the rectangle by selecting it, right clicking on it then choosing the copy command.

Right click again and choose paste to paste a copy of the rectangle back into the slide.

Now we need to move the rectangle into position.

Move the rectangle into position by repeatedly hitting the down arrow key. This only changes the vertical position of the object and keeps the shape perfectly aligned in the horizontal direction.
